JManga to Shut Down in May 2013

JManga sent out an email to the site’s subscribers to announce that it will be “concluding its retail and viewing services on May 30th 2013.” The email also provided the following schedule for its service shutdown:

Digital Manga Purchasing Service Termination
March 26, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. (PDT)

Manga Viewing Service Termination
May 30, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. (PDT)

JManga members with unused JManga Paid Points as of March 13 will be issued Amazon Gift Cards. JManga will process refunds between March 21 and March 25, 2013.

JManga7, the service with unlimited access that JManga hasd launched, shut down on Wednesday, March 13, 2013.

JManga’s Translation Battle 2012 Underway

JManga Co., Ltd., Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs’ “Project to construct a Media Arts Information Base / Consortium” and the Digital Comic Association of Japan have announced that open voting for Manga Translation Battle 2012 has officially begun.

The contest has been narrowed down to 11 finalists, and manga fans worldwide may read all of the finalists’ submissions for free online. Readers can then cast their votes for the top manga translator on the official Manga Translation 2012 page. Online voting polls will be open until December 2, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. (US Pacific Time). Final winners will be announced in December 2012.

There were three titles that contestants could translate: Tomonori Inoue’s COPPELION, Nana Haruta’s Chocolate Cosmos, and Akira Saso’s Shindo.

In addition to the winner being selected through open voting, translators will be judged on their Japanese-English translation abilities by a panel of judges: Deb Aoki (manga editor for About.com), William Flanagan (manga translator), Jonathan “Jake” Tarbox (manga translator), and Ian Condry (Associate Professor of Comparative Media Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

One winning translator will be chosen for each series, and the best out of three will go on to become the Grand Prize Winner.
